12 Reasons Hamsters Are Funny And Cute

Dragos Ciuraru

If you’ve got a hamster in your life, you know they can be the funniest, cutest little creatures ever. If you haven’t experienced the joy of owning a hamster yet, you’re in for a treat. Hamsters are some of the most charming and entertaining pets you can have, and today, I’m going to share with you all the reasons why they’re so lovable.

My hamster, Teddy, is a Syrian male, and I’ve had him since August 2017. Since then, he’s done the weirdest, funniest things you can imagine a hamster doing. So sit down, get cozy, and prepare to go “awww, mine does that too!” Here’s a list of all the reasons hamsters are the cutest pets ever!

1. Hamsters Make the Cutest Faces

Hamsters have the most adorable little faces that are impossible to resist. Whether it’s the fuzzy faces of Dwarf hamsters or the expressive eyes of a Syrian like my Teddy, their looks are simply irresistible. My Teddy got his name because he looks just like a little teddy bear with his round face and soft fur. One of the cutest features is where their whiskers start on their snout, giving them a perpetual pouty look.

And let’s be honest, there’s no such thing as a bad photo of a hamster. Their faces are always dramatic and expressive, making them perfect photo subjects.

2. They Freeze for No Apparent Reason

One of the quirkiest things hamsters do is freeze in place, often with a shocked or panicked expression. It’s like they’re deep in thought or processing something only they can see. This is a classic hamster behavior that many owners find both puzzling and endearing.

There’s actually a reason behind this sudden freezing, and you can learn more about it in detail here, but for now, just know that it’s a natural part of their charm.

3. Hamsters Jump Suddenly, for Any Reason

Hamsters can be jumpy little creatures, often reacting to the smallest stimuli with a sudden leap. My Teddy is a pro at this. When he was younger, he not only jumped but did backflips, especially when something startled him. The funniest moment was when Teddy was busy stuffing paper towels into his cheeks, and I reached near his cage—he jumped sideways about 3 inches, still determinedly stuffing those towels into his face as if nothing had happened.

4. They’re the Tiniest Pets You Can Have

Hamsters are incredibly small, making them some of the tiniest pets you can own. While fish might be smaller, you can’t exactly cuddle a goldfish! The small size of hamsters adds to their charm, though it does make them a bit tricky to handle since they can easily slip out of your hands.

Their tiny size also means they can squeeze into the smallest places, like the gap between the cage bars and their hideout, which is always amusing to watch.

5. A Hamster’s Touch Is Unforgettable

There’s something magical about the first time your hamster touches your hand. Hamsters are usually so busy and jittery that when they actively touch you, it feels special. Their little paws are surprisingly cold and smooth, almost like reptile skin, and feeling them press against your hand is an experience you won’t forget.

6. They Shove Everything in Their Cheeks—Everything

Hamsters are famous for their ability to stuff just about anything into their cheeks. Whether it’s food, bedding, or something they just think is interesting, it all goes into the cheeks. My Teddy once managed to stuff a bit of fleece blanket into his cheeks before I could even react. Watching them fill their cheeks is both fascinating and hilarious.

7. Hamsters Are Amazing Interior Designers

Hamsters are constantly rearranging their cages, dragging bedding, paper towels, and toys into their hideouts to create the perfect nest. It’s always amusing to watch Teddy meticulously move things around, only to decide he needs to redo it all a few minutes later. Their determination to create the perfect nest is nothing short of admirable.

8. Hamsters Are Athletic Furballs

Hamsters are incredibly active, especially at night. They can run up to 9 km (5.5 miles) on their exercise wheels in a single night! My Teddy loves to scale the cage bars and even the ceiling of his cage, showing off his impressive strength and agility. Watching them run, climb, and explore is a joy in itself.

9. A Hamster’s Cleaning Routine Is Ridiculously Detailed

Hamsters are some of the cleanest animals you can have. They spend a significant portion of their time grooming themselves, and it’s always a detailed, meticulous process. My Teddy can spend several minutes just cleaning one ear, making sure every bit of fur is in place. It’s both amusing and adorable to watch them take such care of themselves.

10. They Have the Weirdest Habits Sometimes

Hamsters have some strange habits that never fail to entertain. Teddy, for example, likes to scale the bars of his cage and hang from the ceiling like a little monkey, only to let go and fall back onto the bedding as if nothing happened. He also has a habit of flicking his droppings around, which I can only describe as his version of playtime.

11. They’ll Hoard Everything They Can Get Their Paws On

Hamsters are natural hoarders, and they love to stash food, bedding, and anything else they find in their nests. My Teddy is no exception—his hideout is always full of a mix of food, paper towels, and bits of cardboard. It’s amazing how much they can fit into their tiny spaces, and they always seem to know exactly where everything is.

12. A Hamster That Just Woke Up Is the Most Adorable

There’s nothing cuter than a hamster that has just woken up. Their eyes are half-open, their ears are folded, and they look all puffy and disoriented. My Teddy is at his cutest when he wakes up, sniffs around to make sure everything is okay, and then stretches in the most adorable way. A yawning, stretching hamster is almost too cute to handle.

Hamsters are more than just pets—they’re little bundles of joy that bring endless entertainment and love into your life. From their tiny faces to their quirky habits, there’s no denying that hamsters are some of the cutest creatures around. Whether you’re a seasoned hamster owner or thinking about getting one, these little furballs are sure to steal your heart!
